stairs that go nowhere

I dream of stairs that go nowhere sometimes.

Stairs with steps missing, stairs made of rope, stairs that lead to bridges or dead air or other spiral stairs. Rotten stairs, stairs that end against walls, stairs that are more like ladders. Stairs, stairs, stairs.

I watched Backrooms a few weeks ago and was uncomfortable with how much the landscape mirrored some of my anxiety dreams. The movie didn’t quite hit me in the way it did most people? There weren’t any feelings of horror or dread or anxiety. What I felt, mostly, was like a big question mark. And also really irritated lol

There’s one person in my life who is very into analyzing the meaning of dreams. When the subject of Horror movies came up, I offhandedly mentioned my Backrooms-like dreams and they instantly grabbed on to it. “What do you think it means?” I told them that this has been a mess of week and that trying to climb stairs that don’t work properly as stairs is extremely irritating. You know, as expected. Their response?

“So you’re trying to do your part. You’re climbing the stairs so you can get to where you need to be. But whoever built them did so in the worst way possible. They are disorganized and inefficient and make things more difficult than they need to be. You feel irritated because you’re doing what you have to do, but external factors and people keep messing everything up and make more work for you.”

And doesn’t that make me mad!
